National Urban Innovation Stack – Strategy & Approach

3 Minutes

The Abstract

The National Urban Innovation Stack (NUIS) is a strategic initiative by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, aimed at transforming urban governance and innovation. As India's cities continue to drive economic growth and face diverse challenges, the NUIS provides a shared digital infrastructure designed to empower all stakeholders—citizens, governments, businesses, and academia—to collaborate effectively.

The NUIS is structured as a layered digital platform that includes core data infrastructure, enabling services, and solutions tailored to various urban needs. By promoting interoperability, inclusivity, and data-driven decision-making, the stack supports a vibrant ecosystem of urban actors. It enables the rapid development of innovative solutions that enhance the quality of life, improve governance, and drive sustainable development across India's urban landscape.

Through the NUIS, key programs such as the India Urban Data Exchange (IUDX), Citizen-Centric Smart Governance, and the National Urban Learning Platform are set to change how urban challenges are addressed, ensuring that all Indian cities can access and benefit from state-of-the-art technology and innovation. The NUIS is a significant step towards a more connected, efficient, and resilient urban future for India.
